Hi Everyone and welcome to my Basic Car Care site. Ever since I can remember, I have always loved automobiles. From the time I was 13 years old, I gained a real passion for learning how to fix them and keep them in good working order. Working in the automotive industry helped me to help others to learn how to do basic things on their vehicles.
Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s we had a lot of cool cars on the road. Some were nice to look at and some not so pretty, but to see the muscle cars of the era was pretty cool! I asked a lot of questions when around my male friends so that I could learn more about them.
I want to give back by teaching others what I know.
My Love of Cars
I’ve loved cars. I played matchbox cars with my brother even though my mother tried to keep me from doing that. I just wasn’t interested in dolls so much as I was matchbox cars and Tonka trucks. My brother had this Willys car that would expand when you pressed a button. We took turns racing it back and forth to each other in the hallway.
Growing up most of my friends were male. I just got along better with the boys than the girls. Being with some of my female friends was fun, but sometimes I got bored and I had more fun doing boy stuff. Cars were a part of that as the neighbor kids had nice muscle cars they’d drive through the neighborhood. I’d sit on the porch and watch them drive around.
When my female best friend introduced me to helping maintain her car at 13 years old, I was hooked! I knew then that I wanted to become an automotive mechanic.
I was filling out my courses for senior year at high school and I wanted to go into Auto Shop, I had to have permission of my guidance counselor and my parents. My guidance counselor was over the age of 60, my mother had a sewing business at home she wanted me to take over and girls don’t work on cars. I wasn’t allowed to do what I really wanted to do. I had to find another way.
In the working world, I managed to get into an auto parts store. I realized from the beginning of that, that I didn’t really know very much, so I started asking questions to mechanics and people repairing their cars. Eventually I learned enough being in a car club, going to cruise nights, swap meets, taking with people and becoming more involved with the parts industry, that I could help people learn what I know.
Cars Have Changed Over The Years
So many things have changed on vehicles over the years! The introduction of the 3rd brake light, Bluetooth technology, GPS, Navigation, and many more car-computer integrations. Now it’s all about bringing the car to the dealer to get fixed because they have to drop the engine to work on some of it like the starter which might be up against the firewall.
Older cars were easy to work on. You could get to the area easier than you can today. At least you didn’t have to take half the car apart to get to something simple that needed to be changed out.
I help people look up oil-air filters, wiper blades, batteries, and make suggestions about products that work when there isn’t anyone around to help them. It makes me feel good to do that. They become more confident about taking care of their vehicle.
If you own a car, you should know the basics in caring for it. It helps you keep the car running better longer when you know what needs to be done and where. It helps to also know where to find that information on your vehicle as well.
If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.
All the best,
